AI Weber Carburettor Conversion Kit for
the Sunbeam Alpine Series I-V
and the Sunbeam Rapier Series III-V
This is probably the best performance and drive-ability upgrade you can make to your Sunbeam Alpine.
Not just a collection of off-the-shelf components, the Weber 32/36 Carburettor conversion kit for the Sunbeam Alpine was developed as a project in partnership with Webcon UK Ltd., carefully selecting and tuning each component. The inlet manifold with its curved runners, unique to Alpine Innovations, is mated to the genuine Weber 32/36 DGV carburettor with an insulated spacer gasket. The unique jetting of the carburettor was established after 3 days of testing on Webcon’s rolling-road with the resulting customisation optimised for performance, fuel economy and drive-ability. A plenum chamber, ducting hose and K&N filter enables cooler air to be drawn into the carburettor, rather than air preheated by the exhaust manifold and engine. To complete the kit is the stainless steel throttle linkage, fuel filter and the necessary studs, nuts, washers, hose, clips etc.
An original Sunbeam Alpine Series 5 with twin Stromberg carburettors was used as the test car and testing of the original twin Stromberg setup provided a useful baseline comparison figures. The Weber Conversion was shown to outperform the Strombergs by 17% in like for like comparisons on the rolling road.
"I'm running the dreaded log manifold...." And THERE is your problem. I know you want to make what you have work, but the fact is, it won't... the physics are dead against it. That log manifold allows the mixture to stagnate out at the ends, and the cold manifold then allows the fuel out there to condense, consequently making the cylinders either very lean under low-flow conditions, and become very rich when initially increasing the flow (RPMs), because the fuel condenses at the ends of the 'log' at low flow, and gets flushed out at higher speeds. This explains your plugs... they foul because they get flooded by the raw fuel being splashed onto them because of the condensation, and therefore they don't fire properly... and then once you increase the RPMs it runs fine because it blows out the fuel and draws a normal mixture. If there was a way to successfully heat that manifold hot enough, this wouldn't be as much of a problem, but even the water tube inside it doesn't get it warm enough at the ends to prevent this issue. That's why the Alpine Innovations manifold works better - because the runners are curved and run directly from the plenum to the cylinder ports, there is far less likelihood for the fuel to condense out. Note: This conversion kit is suitable for the Sunbeam Alpine Series I-V and the Sunbeam Rapier Series III-V (with minor adaptations). For Sunbeam Rapier Fastback, Hillman Hunter, Humber Sceptre and Singer Vogue please see our other kit offering for these models. Neither kit is suitable for engines with the cast-iron cylinder head.
